Movements Dance Ensemble

One Phenomenal Day
Two Momentous Occasions

On February 11, 1990 two very important occasions were celebrated – The release of Nelson Mandela from prison and the birth of Movements: The Afro-Caribbean Dance Ensemble. So, on February 11, 2010 these two very important occasions will be celebrated once again, this time to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela from prison and Movements' 20th Birthday.

Over the last twenty years Movements has maintained the link to Mr. Mandela as Sharlene Thomas', founder of Movements, inspiration for the creation of an Afro-Caribbean dance company in Edmonton. Moreover, they continue to work with and support the Nelson Mandela Children's Foundation Canada annually. In 1994, Movements produced a full-length dance theatre tribute to Mr. Mandela in celebration of his South African presidential win and in 1998 Ms. Thomas was invited to the State Dinner in his honour.

Mirroring Mr. Mandela's strength in his tenacity and resilience, Movements looks forward to the next twenty years of Afro-Caribbean dance theatre in Edmonton.

Congratulations on 20 years of freedom, Mr. Mandela!!

Happy 20th Birthday to Movements and a big thank you to all those who made it successful over the last two decades!!
